Provincial chairman inspects Project 666 implementation in Thuan Chau district

Nguyen Dinh Viet, Deputy Secretary of the provincial Party Committee, Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee, and head of the provincial Delegation to the National Assembly, on May 17 led a working delegation to inspect the implementation of the project on stabilising people’s lives and developing the socio-economic conditions of the resettlement areas for the Son La Hydropower Project for the period 2026-2030 (Project 666) in Thuan Chau district.

The delegation, including Vice Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee Le Hong Minh and leaders of several relevant departments and agencies, also reviewed the socio-economic development situation and efforts to eliminate makeshift and dilapidated housing in the district.

The delegation conducted field inspections of several works and projects under Project 666 in Thuan Chau district, including the road from the centre of Bo Muoi commune to the Phieng Sam Kha resettlement site in Bo Muoi commune; and another from the centre of Chieng Ngam commune to the Long Bon - Lan Nguong resettlement site in Chieng Ngam commune.

Project 666 is being implemented in 11 communes of Thuan Chau district in two phases. During the 2018–2020 phase, the district People's Committee invested in nine subprojects with a total capital of over 22 billion VND (848,438 USD), all of which have been completed and put into use. In the 2021–2025 phase, the district has invested in 99 projects with a total capital of over 141 billion VND. To date, 72 projects have been completed and handed over for use, while 24 are under construction.

A review showed that the lives of households resettled for the Son La Hydropower Project in Thuan Chau district have basically stabilised, with living conditions improved compared to their previous residences. As of now, five out of 11 communes with resettlement villages have met the new-style rural standards. For the 2026–2030 period, Thuan Chau district has proposed allocating capital for 75 projects with an estimated budget of 170 billion VND.

Regarding the eradication of makeshift and dilapidated houses, in addition to provincial funding support, the district has mobilised social resources to assist households. To date, the district has supported the construction of 1,351 new houses and repaired 276 others for revolution contributors, poor and near-poor households.

Speaking at the working session with local authorities, Viet praised Thuan Chau district's efforts in infrastructure investment and improving the living conditions of resettled households. He urged the district to continue reviewing projects, finalising plans, and proposing capital needs for resettlement support projects, with a focus on essential infrastructure such as clean water supply systems, irrigation works, and transportation routes to resettlement sites to ensure long-term use and prevent deterioration that could affect travel and trade.
