Launched in 2012, the project was funded by official development assistance (ODA) from the German Government, non-refundable aid from the Swiss Government, and counterpart funding from the Vietnamese Government, with a total investment of over 932 billion VND (35.44 million USD).

The project is managed by the Son La provincial ODA Project Management Unit. It includes a wastewater treatment plant with a capacity of 6,857 cu.m per day, seven pumping stations with capacities ranging from 67 cu.m per hour to 780.98 cu.m per hour, 75.2 km of sewer pipelines (primary, secondary, tertiary, and pressure pipelines), tertiary network connections for 9,000 households. It upgrades 2.5 km of stormwater drainage system, and repairs 8.3 km of urban roads.

The treatment plant is equipped with an automated control system that collects, monitors, and operates all equipment across the plant and pumping stations. Treated wastewater meets the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment’s standards for discharge into domestic-use water sources. The discharge process is monitored around the clock via an online system connected directly to the ministry.

Nguyen Dinh Viet, Deputy Secretary of the provincial Party Committee and Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee, delivers a speech at the ceremony.

Speaking at the ceremony, Viet praised the dedication and high sense of responsibility shown by departments, contractors, consultants, and supervisors, as well as the strong support and cooperation of local residents. He also expressed gratitude to Germany’s KfW Development Bank for its financial and technical support throughout the project implementation.

The operation of this system is expected to bring long-term, practical benefits such as reducing urban flooding, improving wastewater treatment efficiency, and ensuring environmental compliance. The project lays a foundation for sustainable, green development in wards along the Nam La Stream, aligning with environmental protection, climate change response, and improved living standards for residents.
