Son La reduces plastic pollution, protects clean water, take action against natural disasters

The Department of Agriculture and Environment, in coordination with the People’s Committee of Son La city, held a ceremony to launch activities in response to World Environment Day (June 5), the National Week for Clean Water and Environmental Sanitation, and the National Week for Disaster Prevention and Control 2025 at Tay Bac (Northwest) Square on June 4.

Attending the event were Dang Ngoc Hau, Vice Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee; leaders of provincial departments, agencies, and socio-political organisations; leaders of the Son La city People’s Committee; and representatives of businesses operating in the province.

With the theme "Clean Water for a Green and Sustainable Countryside," the National Week for Clean Water and Environmental Sanitation 2025 continues to emphasise the vital importance of clean water, especially in remote, mountainous, and disadvantaged areas. The campaign calls for collective action from the entire community to protect this precious resource.

Speaking at the launching ceremony, Vice Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee Dang Ngoc Hau emphasised that Son La is committed to taking strong action under the spirit of "Shifting Awareness – Taking Concrete Action – Creating Lasting Impact."

He called on departments, sectors, agencies, and localities to step up communication and education efforts to raise public awareness about the dangers of plastic pollution, the protection of water resources, and climate change adaptation.

He also stressed the need to improve forecasting, warning, and disaster response capacities at the provincial, district, and commune levels, especially in high-risk areas. Local authorities are urged to finalise emergency response plans and invest in effective disaster prevention facilities that serve the community in practical ways.

Furthermore, he underscored the importance of strengthening inspection and supervision efforts, and strictly handling violations of laws related to natural resources, the environment, iillegal discharge of waste, improper exploitation of water resources, and the construction of unsafe infrastructure.

At the event, the Organising Committee presented banners, slogans, and posters to the People’s Committees of districts, Moc Chau township, and Son La city; donated 30 source-separation waste bins to the People’s Committees of communes and wards in Son La city; and handed over trees to the Department of Agriculture and Environment and the city People’s Committee.

Immediately following the launching ceremony, a series of environmental activities took place, including exchanging paper and plastic waste for plants and other recycled products; fish releasing at Uncle Ho’s fish pond; tree planting; and a cycling parade with enthusiastic participation from local youth union members.
