Technical support project strengthens immunization in Son La’s disadvantaged areas

The provincial Centre for Disease Control, in collaboration with PATH Vietnam, on July 29 held a conference to summarize a technical support project aimed at strengthening immunization efforts in disadvantaged areas of Son La province.

At the conference reviewing the technical support project to strengthen immunization in disadvantaged areas in Son La province.

The project, funded by US-based non-profit global health organization PATH, has been implemented since September 2024 in four areas: Mai Son, Muong La, Yen Chau, and Thuan Chau. Its goal is to strengthen the capacity of the expanded immunization system and increase the rate of full immunization for children under one year old in several disadvantaged localities of Son La province affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

After one year of implementation, the project organised more than 560 communication sessions promoting immunization, reaching about 5,000 people. Twelve advocacy articles and skits were produced and translated into Mong and Thai ethnic languages, broadcast on local radio channels and shared on social media platforms like Facebook and Zalo of the Youth Union and Women’s Union. The project successfully persuaded 154 families who had previously refused vaccination to take their children for immunization.

The rate of fully immunized children under one year old in the project areas increased from 22.3% in June 2024 to 52.8% in June 2025. By the end of July 2025, 65 staff members had been trained as master trainers to support on-site training in the use of budgeting tools.

Additionally, 84 commune health stations have applied these tools to plan immunization budgets for 2026. Furthermore, specialised training courses equipped healthcare workers and social organisations with essential skills in immunization management, supervision, and communication, laying the groundwork for sustainable campaigns.
