In the first eight months of the year, the province's total aquaculture output reached 5,105 tonnes, an increase of 1.43% compared to the same period last year. By continuing to utilise the water surface areas of Son La hydropower reservoir and the province's extensive river and lake systems, local farmers have expanded aquaculture farming. They have focused on pond maintenance and improvement, and adopted new techniques such as durable iron-framed cages and high-resistance specialised nets.

The province is also scaling up farming models of high-value aquatic species such as salmon, sturgeon, and giant freshwater prawn.
