Son La police conduct counter-terrorism, hostage rescue drill 2026

The Son La provincial Department of Public Security held a counter-terrorism and hostage rescue drill 2026 at Son La Sugar Joint Stock Company on August 4. The exercise was attended by Nguyen Thanh Cong, Vice Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee, along with leaders of the provincial Department of Public Security, the provincial Military Command and relevant professional units.

The exercise scenario involved an armed group plotting to attack the headquarters of the Party Committee, People’s Council, People’s Committee and Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Mai Son commune.

After being detected and chased by law enforcement forces, some suspects were arrested while others fled and launched an attack on the administration building of Son La Sugar Joint Stock Company, taking staff and workers hostage and barricading themselves inside. The assailants demanded the release of their accomplices, as well as vehicles and a safe passage to facilitate their escape.

The provincial Department of Public Security established an operational command and mobilised the Mobile Police Force and other professional units to implement the response plan.

The forces swiftly surrounded and cordoned off the scene, regulated traffic, evacuated residents, assessed the situation, established communication channels and conducted negotiations to persuade the suspects to surrender, while deploying covert teams to approach the target.

The Mobile Police Force then launched a coordinated assault from multiple directions, subduing and arresting the suspects, safely rescuing the hostages and pursuing those who attempted to flee.

After the hostage rescue operation, medical teams provided first aid to the injured, while firefighters dealt with fire outbreaks and ensured the safety of people and property. The exercise was conducted as planned and closely reflected real-life scenarios, ensuring absolute safety for personnel, vehicles and equipment while achieving all set objectives.

Speaking at the exercise, Vice Chairman Cong praised the sense of responsibility demonstrated by the participating forces. He asked the provincial police to continue playing a core role by regularly reviewing and refining response plans and stepping up training and exercises. He also urged Son La Sugar Joint Stock Company to proactively strengthen internal security and enhance coordination with the police to improve operational readiness, response capabilities and awareness of security and safety at the facility.
