The proposed reserve covers approximately 128,250 hectares, comprising a 34,853-hectare core zone, a 26,354-hectare buffer zone and a 67,043-hectare transition zone. The study area spans eight communes: Ngoc Chien, Chieng Lao, Muong La, Chieng Hoa, Xim Vang, Ta Xua, Suoi To and Muong Coi.
Key tasks include public outreach and community consultation; field surveys and data collection on biodiversity, natural conditions, socio-economic factors and cultural heritage; and reviews of existing plans and investment projects to ensure they do not conflict with conservation objectives.
The province will also prepare the nomination dossier in accordance with UNESCO requirements, complete the geographic information system (GIS) mapping, and develop a management plan, a sustainable development strategy and a proposed governance structure for the reserve.
The plan will run from August 2026 to September 2027. The dossier is expected to complete domestic appraisal before June 30, 2027, and be submitted through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Vietnam National Commission for UNESCO to the Secretariat of UNESCO’s Man and the Biosphere Programme in Paris by September 30, 2027. UNESCO is expected to conduct its international assessment between October 2027 and June 2028.
The plan has an estimated budget of 3.5 billion VND (135,388 USD) from the state budget, including 500 million VND allocated for 2026 and 3 billion VND for 2027.
The nomination aims to conserve biodiversity, maintain forest ecosystem connectivity and promote the area’s natural and cultural assets, while encouraging cooperation and mobilising resources for Son La’s green and sustainable economic development./.
