Traditional sport and folk game competition opens

As part of a series of events celebrating the 130th founding anniversary of Son La province (October 10, 1895 – 2025), the provincial Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism opened a competition of traditional sports and ethnic folk games on October 8 morning at Tay Bac Square. The event formed part of the National Target Programme on Socio-Economic Development in Ethnic Minority and Mountainous Areas .

The event attracted 150 athletes from Chieng An, Chieng Coi, To Hieu, and Chieng Sinh wards, who competed in five traditional sports, including tug of war, stick pushing, ‘to mak le’, ‘con’ (cloth ball) throwing, and crossbow shooting.

The event features diverse and exciting activities, from folk-style sports to traditional games associated with the daily life and production practices of local people, promising lively and engaging performances while vividly showcasing the rich cultural heritage of Son La’s ethnic communities.

The competition not only provides an opportunity for athletes to exchange experience and improve their physical fitness but also serves as an occasion to honour, preserve, and promote the unique traditional cultural and sport values of Son La’s ethnic groups.
