Plum-picking contest attracts crowds at first Phieng Khoai Plum Festival

A plum-picking contest was held on the morning of May 16, as part of the first Phieng Khoai Plum Festival 2026, attracting large numbers of local residents and tourists.

Contestants take part in the plum-picking competition.

To prepare for the contest, Phieng Khoai commune surveyed and selected plum orchards with large cultivation areas, abundant fruit, a high percentage of ripe plums, thus offering favourable conditions for organising the competition as well as serving visitors coming for sightseeing and hands-on experiences.

The competing teams select large, beautiful, ripe plums to pick. Climbing trees, shaking branches, or picking unripe fruit are prohibited.

The contest featured 10 teams from hamlets with large plum-growing areas in the commune. Each team consisted of three members dressed in traditional ethnic costumes, taking part in the plum-picking challenge.

Contestants are excited when they find plum trees laden with ripe fruit.

Within five minutes, team members had to carefully choose and pick large and ripe plums. They were not allowed to climb trees, shake branches, pick unripe fruit, break branches, crush fruit, or cause any damage to the trees that could affect fruit quality. The team harvesting the greatest quantity of plums was crowned the winner.

The judging panel weighs the amount of plums harvested by each team.

Alongside the on-site activities, many mass organisations, youth union members, and orchard owners also conducted livestreams on social media platforms to promote local plums. Through live broadcasts from the orchards, viewers can follow the vibrant festival, learn about the process of caring for and harvesting the plums, and place orders for the products during the event itself. This activity helped expand sale channels, promote the local image, and advance digital transformation in agricultural product consumption.
