Nearly five years into the implementation of its elite sports development project for the 2021–2030 period, Son La province has achieved significant progress, enhancing its position on both the national and international sporting maps.

The project is structured in two phases. Phase I (2021–2025) focuses on training athletes in key disciplines such as athletics, pencak silat, muay, taekwondo, cycling, badminton, boxing, tennis, and women’s football. It also includes the introduction of new sports like kickboxing and weightlifting, while maintaining 3–4 youth teams under training at the provincial Centre for Sports Training and Competition.

Phase II (2026–2030) will continue developing athletes in 12 sports and expand training to include traditional wrestling and martial arts. During this phase, 4–6 youth teams will be maintained, and elite athletes will be trained intensively across 14 key sports.

Each year, the province allocates funding tailored to practical needs, prioritising areas such as nutrition, athlete stipends, incentives, living allowances, competition uniforms, insurance, and post-career support for returning athletes. Investment has also gone into building specialised training facilities for sports such as boxing, muay, table tennis, and pencak silat, as well as rehabilitation and recreation rooms. Additionally, athletes are sent for domestic training camps, and coaches are provided with professional development opportunities.

Since 2021, the recruitment and training system for elite athletes has been methodically and scientifically developed. The provincial sports centre is currently training 143 athletes, including 44 for the provincial teams and 99 for the provincial youth teams. Many Son La athletes have been called to national teams and have achieved notable success internationally, including standout names such as Bac Thi Khiem, Quang Thi Thu Nghia, Lo Thi Hoang, Tong Thi Ly, Ca Thi Minh, Quang Thi Nhung, Luong Anh Tuyet, and Ca Thi Quyen. To date, 76 athletes have been awarded national master titles, and 161 have been recognised as national first-class athletes.

The province has consistently invested in upgrading training and competition infrastructure to provide the best possible conditions for athletes. In addition to on-the-spot training, the centre has also collaborated with other localities and institutions with strong sports capabilities to send athletes for specialised training, helping them gain experience and improve competition psychology. Currently, 11 Son La athletes are training with national teams in taekwondo, pencak silat, and cycling.

The comprehensive investment has laid a solid foundation for the sustainable development of elite sports in Son La. Since 2022, the province’s athletes have participated in 123 regional, national, and international competitions, bringing home over 444 medals, including 130 golds, 105 silvers, and 209 bronzes. Notably, taekwondo, pencak silat, and javelin athletes have secured 15 gold and silver medals at regional and international events such as SEA Games 31 and 32, ASIAD, and the World and Asian Championships. These achievements have gradually affirmed Son La’s growing stature in sports arenas at home and abroad.
