An overview of the meeting commemorating the 96th founding anniversary of the Vietnam Trade Union.

At the event, delegates recalled the 96-year development history of the Vietnam Trade Union in general and the provincial Federation of Labour in particular. On February 25, 1963, the Son La provincial Trade Union was established. Over the past 62 years, it has grown steadily and made significant contributions to the development of the province and the country.

Each year, trade unions at all levels support between 5,000 to 7,000 members, workers, and employees in difficult circumstances—those with serious illnesses or without housing. The emulation movement "Good Labour – Creative Labour" continues to assert the trade union’s role in promoting emulation across the province. Annually, between 3,000 and 4,000 initiatives and useful solutions are accepted and applied in practice, helping to improve professional work and production efficiency, as well as reduce costs for units and enterprises.

Monitoring compliance with labour laws at units and enterprises with trade unions has also been strengthened.

Implementing the Politburo’s directive on streamlining the organisational structure of the Vietnam Fatherland Front, socio-political organisations, and mass associations, the Son La Trade Union has reduced 85% of grassroots-level units and 75% of union members. Currently, the provincial Federation of Labour directly manages 184 grassroots trade unions with 12,486 members in the public service and business sectors.

In her speech, Thai Thu Xuong emphasised that restructuring and reorganising the apparatus is not only a necessary requirement of the reform process but also an opportunity for trade unions to review and strengthen their staff, reduce the number of administrative units, and enhance proactiveness and flexibility.

She expressed her hope that the Son La Federation of Labour will continue to innovate its content and operational methods, implement effective models and initiatives, and better meet the legitimate needs and aspirations of union members. She also encouraged maintaining a proactive spirit, staying close to the grassroots level, and focusing on workers to build a truly strong trade union that serves as a reliable support for its members and employees.
