In 2025, Son La province experienced 15 cold air spells, five widespread severe cold snaps, four widespread heatwaves, eight thunderstorms accompanied by whirlwinds, lightning and hail, and 13 episodes of widespread heavy rain.
Natural disasters caused serious damage to people, housing, infrastructure and production activities. In particular, they left 13 people dead and 11 injured, and damaged 4,294 houses, with total losses estimated at approximately 1.29 trillion VND (49 million USD).
Disaster prevention and control, search and rescue efforts across the province were implemented in a coordinated manner and achieved many important results. Forecasting and warning work was gradually improved, while the “four-on-the-spot” principle proved effective. Relocation and disaster recovery efforts were carried out promptly, helping minimise losses and stabilise people’s lives.
Amid increasingly unusual weather patterns, disaster prevention and control, search and rescue efforts must become more proactive and decisive, ensuring no passivity or surprise in any situation. Authorities were urged to adhere to the principle of “Proactive prevention – Accurate forecasting – Timely warning – Effective response – Swift recovery – Safety for people,” while placing people at the centre of all efforts and prioritising the protection of lives and property above all else.
