Son La welcomes delegation from Australian Embassy in Vietnam

A delegation from the Australian Embassy in Vietnam led by Development Counsellor Naomi Cook on April 22 paid a working visit to Son La province to evaluate the second phase of the Gender-Responsive Equitable Agriculture and Tourism in Son La province (GREAT 2 Son La).

Welcoming and working with the delegation were Trang Thi Xuan, member of the provincial Party Committee’s Standing Board, Permanent Vice Chairwoman of the provincial People's Committee, and head of the Steering Committee for GREAT 2 Son La, and leaders of several provincial departments and agencies.

The project has developed market systems in the fields of agriculture and tourism. To date, eight proposals have been approved and implemented, fulfilling 61.5% of the target, while five proposals are in the finalisation stage. The total project investment amounts to 15.2 million AUD (9.75 million USD), of which 14.32 million AUD is non-refundable official development assistance (ODA). As of March 2025, 4.12 million AUD had been disbursed, representing 29% of the total funding. The local reciprocal funding sourced from the provincial budget (public investment) is 14.5 billion VND (558,336 USD), with 3.5 billion VND disbursed.

At the working session, Xuan thanked the Australian Embassy and the Australian Government for their support in implementing the project. She also expressed her hope for continued attention and assistance from the Australian Government to effectively implement GREAT 2, particularly in developing agriculture and tourism under value chains, and promoting digital transformation, digital integration, and capacity building for local people, cooperatives, and enterprises.

The province will focus on directing departments and sectors to coordinate closely with the project to promptly finalise the remaining five sub-project proposals, ensuring the project is effectively implemented, achieving the set objectives and timeline.

The Australian Embassy delegation also expressed their wish that Son La province will accelerate the completion of the five sub-projects, including digital integration in agriculture and tourism; development of Vietnamese ginseng in Son La; development of medicinal herbs in Son La; innovation in supply chain management; and behavioral change economics for gender equality.
