The scientific conference on the current situation and solutions for developing strawberry in Son La province associated with building the “Son La Strawberry” brand.

Currently, Son La province has over 400 hectares of strawberries, with an output of over 3,000 tons of fruit per year, grown mainly in Moc Chau, Yen Chau and Mai Son districts. There are 20 cooperatives producing and trading fresh strawberries, strawberry jam, and strawberry syrup. Of which, fresh strawberries account for 80-90% of the total output. Son La strawberries have delicious quality, with main consumers being Hanoi and northern provinces. In recent years, Son La strawberries have seen strong price fluctuations in the market, due to a sharp increase in growing area and competition with Chinese strawberries. Building the "Son La Strawberry” brand from changing farming trends is a prerequisite for bringing strawberries to large markets, giving long-term and sustainable economic benefits to people and businesses.

The conference discussed, evaluated and analyzed the current situation of strawberry production and consumption in the area; shared experience in developing strawberries under the value chain, and building a production and consumption chain in cooperatives. It also evaluated the economic efficiency of strawberry production associated with tourism development; and disease-free strawberry breeding process.

The Department of Science and Technology proposed the Vietnam Academy of Agricultural Sciences acquire comments at the conference, continue to coordinate with localities to assess the current situation, and guide safe production processes; transfer disease-free tissue culture techniques, helping localities proactively prepare seeds; build and deploy a system managing the certified brand for Son La strawberry products, increasing competitiveness and creating more income for organizations and individuals involved in strawberry production and trading in the locality.
