Late-ripening longan offers high income to farmers

Long Phieng commune in Yen Chau district is home to over 600 hectares of longan, mainly late-ripening.

Farmers in Long Phieng commune, Yen Chau district harvest late-ripening longan.

To improve longan productivity and quality, the commune has coordinated with specialised agencies of the district to guide cooperatives and households to follow the organic and VietGAP production processes, and grow some new varieties on a trial basis.

At the same time, it has contacted businesses, wholesalers, supermarkets and other provinces to sign contracts to purchase the product. Local farmers have harvested all of the late-ripening longan area to date, with an average yield of 13 tonnes per hectare, and a total output of nearly 6,000 tonnes. Many households earn from 250-700 million VND (10,160-28,449 USD) from late-ripening longan each year.
