Mai Son: Over 6,080 hectares of crops affected by drought

Due to the impact of the prolonged El Nino phenomenon, over 6,080 out of more than 21,700 hectares of crops of all kinds in Mai Son district are suffering withered leaves and fruit dropping, thus affecting productivity, quality, and economic efficiency.

Affected crop areas include over 1,280 hectares of rice, maize, and vegetables; over 2,100 hectares of fruit trees; and nearly 2,700 hectares of industrial trees and several other crops.

Farmers in Chieng Ban commune, Mai Son district apply water-saving irrigation systems for crops.

Mai Son district is urgently directing the Mai Son branch of the Son La irrigation work management and exploitation one-member limited company to coordinate with communes and grassroots-level irrigation groups to implement plans and measures to maintain the irrigation and drainage capacity of the existing irrigation system; check and zone off areas at risk of drought, develop plans to combat drought, and change crop structure; and direct the acceleration of construction and completion of irrigation and domestic water supply projects to promptly put them into use, thus ensuring enough water to serve people's lives and production.
