RoK-funded smart agriculture project comes to Son La

The People’s Committee of Son La province on April 22 coordinated with the Fruit and Vegetable Research Institute in organising a signing ceremony for a cooperation agreement on the implementation of the "Smart farming for the future generation" project at the Moc Chau area for research, application and transfer of scientific and technological advances in the agricultural and forestry sectors.

The event was attended by Vice Chairman of the provincial People's Committee Nguyen Thanh Cong, Director of the Fruit and Vegetable Research Institute Associate Prof. Dr. Nguyen Quoc Hung, and representatives from departments and agencies in the province.

At the signing ceremony for the cooperation agreement on the implementation of the "Smart farming for the future generation" project.

The above-said Moc Chau area covers 35,000 sq.m, with a tissue culture room, a laboratory, a showroom of “One Commune-One Product” (OCOP) items, and membrane houses serving the production of seasonal flowers, vegetables and fruits.

Based on the proposal of the Fruit and Vegetable Research Institute on using membrane houses for hydroponic vegetable production, the provincial Department of Science and Technology plans to use an existing membrane house in the area for trial production and building a demonstration model for growing hydroponic vegetables.

The existing membrane house will be modernised, with smart equipment controlling temperature, humidity, light and irrigation, and using soilless medium. The Fruit and Vegetable Research Institute will select suitable local vegetable varieties to grow and propagate by hydroponic technology, assess vegetable quality and perform post-harvest management to develop the demonstration and training model within the framework of the project.

The model forms part of the "Smart farming for the future generation" project funded by the Repuiblic of Korea (RoK), through the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO), with a total cost of 46,000 USD. The model is scheduled to run from April 2024 to May 2025.

Leaders of Son La province and the Fruit and Vegetable Research Institute sign the cooperation agreement.
