Currently, Son La province has 71 small hydroelectric power plants projects that have been granted investment policies and certificates with a total capacity of 870.65 MW. Of which, 57 projects with a total capacity of 670.05 MW have been completed; four are under construction with a combined capacity of 98 MW; 10 are in the stage of preparation with a total capacity of 102.6 MW; and five are being evaluated for investment policies with a total capacity of 36.5 MW.

The development of small and medium hydropower plants has significantly contributed to the national energy development strategy, ensuring national energy security and meeting the socio-economic development needs of the province.
