Strawberry – typical product of Moc Chau

Strawberry was first planted in Moc Chau district more than 10 years ago. Compatible with the soil and climate in the mountainous region, strawberry has gradually asserted itself as a strong crop, bringing high economic efficiency to local people.

Farmers in Muong Sang commune, Moc Chau district harvest ripe strawberries

From a few hectares initially piloted, there are currently nearly 130 hectares of strawberry in Moc Chau district, mainly in Dong Sang and Muong Sang communes, and Moc Chau and Moc Chau Farm towns.

At Nguyen Dinh Huy’s “Huy beo farm” in Muong Sang’s La Nga 2 hamlet, thanks to the application of science and technology in production, his two hectares of strawberry have high productivity and output. On average, one hectare yields 18 tonnes of fruit. With selling prices ranging from 100,000-300,000 VND (4.08-12.25 USD) per kg, his family earns about 2 billion VND (81,666 USD) per hectare. In addition, the farm also creates regular jobs for 10 labourers with an average monthly income of 6 million VND a person.

Huy's farm also attracts many tourists to contemplate, take photos and experience picking strawberries to both enjoy and bring home as gifts. At the beginning of the harvest period, the farm collects 100-200 kg a day. The figure increases to around 500 kg during the main season after the Lunar New Year. About 30% of the fruits are sold to visitors to the farm.

With nearly 80 hectares, Dong Sang commune is one of the localities with the largest strawberry growing area in the district. Realising the economic efficiency of growing strawberry and understanding market demand, the commune has encouraged locals to change their crop structure and expand the concentrated strawberry growing area, while coordinating with related agencies to organise training classes guiding households to grow the plant in accordance with VietGAP standards, so that the fruit is delicious, clean and safe, gaining consumers’ trust.

Strawberry has a high economic value, but is also a very difficult-to-grow agricultural product requiring a lot of care. Therefore, to ensure quality, all strawberry varieties are incubated and grown by local farmers. Currently, the locals grow strawberries in accordance with VietGAP standards by applying high technology, building greenhouses and net houses, and using drip irrigation and automatic fertilisation to increase productivity, product quality and value. The production process lasts from April to the same month of the following year. On average, one hectare yields about 15 tonnes of fruit worth about 2 billion VND.

Suitable for the local climate and soil, Moc Chau strawberry is big in size, juicy, and bright red with a sweet taste. In addition to selling fresh strawberries, farm owners also produce strawberry jam and syrup, and dried strawberries. Currently, Moc Chau strawberry has become one of the district’s typical agricultural products. Many products in large farms have been certified to meet VietGAP standards, and are available in supermarkets in Hanoi and numerous provinces and cities nationwide.

The district has encouraged families and businesses to invest in growing this plant in accordance with VietGAP standards to increase product value and contribute to diversifying signature agricultural products on Moc Chau plateau.
