Son La has suitable climate and soil conditions for cultivating Arabica coffee. Since the late 1980s, Son La province has implemented the Arabica coffee development programme. The province boasts the largest Arabica coffee growing area in the country with over 20,000 hectares, accounting for 41.2% of the country's total Arabica coffee area. Coffee is grown mainly in Mai Son, Thuan Chau, Yen Chau, Sop Cop districts and Son La city. Currently, there are nearly 18,000 hectares certified as sustainable or equivalent, with output reaching over 204,000 tonnes of fresh cherries valued at over 2 trillion VND (81.5 million USD). Two coffee regions have been recognized by the provincial People's Committee as high-tech agricultural areas, with one geographical indication of Son La Coffee. Son La province has attracted and created conditions for businesses to invest, build and put into operation modern large-scale coffee processing factories, meeting the needs of production, processing, consumption and export. Son La Coffee products have been exported to 20 EU countries, North America, the Middle East and ASEAN with stable and high prices; contributing to increasing the income of coffee growers and processors, and creating more jobs.
