Vietnam Buddhist Sangha’s Son La chapter convenes congress for 2026–2031 term

The Executive Committee of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha’s Son La chapter (VBS Son La) held its fourth Congress for the 2026–2031 term on August 16 at the provincial Cultural Centre in To Hieu ward.

The event was attended by Most Venerable Thich Thanh Nhieu, Standing Member of the VBS Council and Standing Vice President of the VBS’s Executive Council; representatives of the VBS chapters in Phu Tho, Lao Cai and Tuyen Quang provinces; and representatives from the Government Committee for Religious Affairs and the Ministry of Public Security’s Department of Internal Security.

Representing Son La province was Dang Ngoc Hau, Vice Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee, along with more than 300 delegates representing monks, nuns and Buddhist followers across the province.

During the 2022–2027 term, the Executive Committee of VBS Son La carried out a wide range of religious activities to meet the spiritual and religious needs of monks, nuns, Buddhists and local residents. It worked with authorities at various levels to promote compliance with the Party’s guidelines and the State’s policies and laws.

The committee also stepped up charitable and social welfare programmes, including the construction of solidarity houses, schools and classrooms, disaster relief and activities honouring those who made contributions to the country. These efforts totaled more than 30 billion VND (1.14 million USD) in funding.

Under the theme “Discipline – Innovation – Efficiency - Effectiveness,” the fourth-term Executive Committee of VBS Son La for 2026–2031 will continue to promote unity and harmony to build a strong sangha.

The committee will focus on training and developing monks and nuns to build a stronger pool of personnel for Buddhist activities. It will also expand charitable and social welfare programmes, contributing to national solidarity and the province’s socio-economic development.

The newly elected Executive Committee of VBS Son La for the 2026–2031 term was formally introduced at the congress.

Delegates also heard a report on the results of the committee’s first meeting, which elected its Standing Board and key leadership positions. Venerable Thich Minh Duc was appointed head of the Executive Committee of VBS Son La for the 2026–2031 term.

Addressing the congress, Vice Chairman Hau called on the Executive Committee of VBS Son La to continue promoting patriotism, unity and harmony, and to encourage monks, nuns and Buddhist followers to lead a life that balances religious devotion with civic responsibility and contribute to the province’s development.

He also urged the committee to promote the humanistic and ethical values of Buddhism and take a more active role in social welfare, charitable and humanitarian activities.

At the event, the Executive Committee of VBS Son La presented six “gratitude houses” to residents in Moc Chau ward and Bac Yen and Phu Yen communes, each valued at 60 million VND.

The VBS Son La Executive Committee provides support to localities to help replace makeshift housing.
