The festival originates from the ancient story about two beautiful and talented Thai girls named Bang and Muong who taught local people how to farm, weave, dance and sing Pi songs. To show gratitude to the two girls, Chieng Khoa people built a temple and called it Nang Bang - Nang Muong Temple (Bang Muong Temple). The Ban Flower Festival is held annually in Chieng Khoa to commemorate and express gratitude to the two girls, honour the nation's traditional culture and noble moral values. It also aims to pray for good weather, bumper harvests, good health and good luck in the new year.
The worshipping ritual is performed by a Thai ethnic shaman with the following contents: inviting the land, river and mountain gods and Miss Ban to attend the festival, join the festive atmosphere with the people and bless the villagers with a year of good weather and bumper crops. The ritual is also performed in a solemn and respectful atmosphere, expressing the people's gratitude to Miss Ban and the gods who govern the land.
The worshiping ritual is held every year, becoming a traditional cultural feature preserved by the Thai people here for many generations, showing the tradition of “when drinking water, remember its source” and reminding descendants of preserving the ethnic group’s culture.
