Spring programme warms hearts of border residents

The “Border guard spring warms hearts of border residents” programme, jointly held by border guard stations and partner units under the direction of the provincial Border Guard Command, has featured many meaningful activities for welcoming the Lunar New Year (Tet), bringing joy to residents living in border areas.

Soldiers from the provincial Border Guard Command and locals in Chieng Khua commune, Moc Chau district, wrap banh chung (square sticky rice cake).

To welcome the Year of the Snake 2025, the Border Guard Command chose Chieng Khuong commune, Song Ma district, to host the provincial-level programme. The event attracted the participation of numerous officials, Party members, and local residents. This year, the provincial Border Guard Command and sponsoring units donated over 1,200 gift packages to poor and near-poor households in Chieng Khuong, Muong Sai, Muong Hung, and Muong Cai communes.

Colonel Vu Duc Tu, Deputy Political Commissar of the provincial Border Guard Command, said that the programme saw the close cooperation of organisations and individuals both within and outside the province. The gifts brought by donors helped border residents have a fuller Tet, reflecting the tradition of "mutual support" and expressing gratitude to border residents for their role in safeguarding the nation's territorial sovereignty and border security.”

The spirit of "The post is our home, the border is our homeland, and the people of the ethnic group are our close relatives" was clearly reflected in the activities of the programme. All attendees participated in activities such as wrapping banh chung (square sticky rice cake), cultural and art exchanges, sports competitions, and folk games like stick pushing and tug-of-war.

Cam Van Kho, secretary of the Party cell and head of Ten Panh hamlet in Chieng Khuong, stated, "The programme has brought joy to the border people during Tet. It has helped them gain more motivation to develop the economy and work with the border guards to protect the nation’s sovereignty. We hope that every spring, the border guards will continue to organize such programmes, so every family can enjoy a joyful and full Tet."

For the past 10 years, the programme has been marked by a series of meaningful and practical activities, including free health checkups and medicine distribution for local residents; and visits to local authorities, elders, village heads, influential individuals, and those protecting border markers. It has also given gifts to policy beneficiary families, revolution contributors, and women in difficult circumstances. Additionally, scholarships have been awarded to children in the “Supporting Children to School” and “Children of Border Guard Posts” programmes. The national flags and the portraits of President Ho Chi Minh have been presented to border communities. Officers, soldiers, and residents have joined together in lively dance and music performances, creating a joyful, warm spring atmosphere.

Lieutenant Colonel Tran Duy Thuong, Political Commissar of the Chieng On Border Guard Station in Yen Chau district, said: “For the Year of the Snake, the station has collaborated with agencies, units, and philanthropists to organise a programme in Chieng On commune. This year, we donated over 200 gift packages, 100 national flags, portraits of President Ho Chi Minh, and essential goods, with a total value exceeding 100 million VND (3,987 USD), to the people of Chieng On and Phieng Khoai communes.”

The "Border guard spring warms hearts of border residents" programme aims to support policy beneficiary families and poor households, ensuring they have a joyful and warm Tet. It also reflects the traditional values of mutual assistance, as well as the responsibility and affection of the border guards, local authorities, and mass organizations for the people in border areas. This contributes to improving their material and spiritual life, strengthening solidarity, and reinforcing the strong bond between the military and the people, while further enhancing the noble qualities of the “Uncle Ho’s Soldiers.”
