Hong Ngai commune is nearly 10km from the centre of Bac Yen district, mainly inhabited by the Mong ethnic people on a total area of nearly 57sq.km. It boasts A Phu couple’s cave, which is over 100m long and over 40m at the widest, and goes through a rocky mountain range. The cave entrance is high and wide. This place has both historical and cultural values, inspiring many writers, poets, and musicians to write novels and love songs imbued with the identity of the Mong ethnic people in Bac Yen district, including “A Phu couple” by writer To Hoai, and “Bai ca tren nui” (Song on the Mountain) song by musician Nguyen Van Thuong.
The two-day festival comprises a thanksgiving ritual and a festive part. The thanksgiving ritual was held at the foot of A Phu couple's cave, while the festive part featured panpipe dancing, ‘pa pao’ (cloth ball) throwing, crossbow shooting, stick pushing, spinning, tug of war, ‘banh day’ (round glutinous rice cake) pounding, and cuisine. In addition, there were also booths showcasing agricultural products from mountainous communes and paintings on A Phu couple.
The festival aims to preserve and promote the cultural beauty and traditional value of the Mong ethnic people; encourage locals to build a cultural life; introduce potential and cultural identities of ethnic groups associated with tourism development of Bac Yen district in general and Hong Ngai commune - hometown of A Phu couple, in particular so as to attract more tourists inside and outside province.
