Son La women join hands to protect environment

Today, across local communities, it is easy to see vibrant flower-lined roads, well-maintained self-managed streets, houses labeled “Clean House – Beautiful Garden,” and “Recyclable Waste Collection” models. These visible changes come from the environmental protection movement of Women’s Union members, which has helped transform the rural landscape.

In the early days of the new year, officials and members of the Women’s Union in Song Ma commune enthusiastically participated in the “Tet Tree-Planting Festival” and flower garden renovations. Vi Thi Trang, Chairwoman of the communal Women’s Union, shared that alongside tree planting activities, the union has directed local chapters to care for and replant flower roads and women-managed streets, while organising regular clean-ups of village roads and alleys.

The commune continues to effectively implement the “5 No’s, 3 Cleans” campaign, with nine households awarded “5 No’s, 3 Cleans” plaques; 22 households recognised as having “Clean House”; and 163 households labeled “Clean House – Beautiful Garden.” These efforts highlight the active role of the communal Women’s Union in building new-style rural areas and maintaining a green, clean, and beautiful environment.

In Lua hamlet, Chieng Coi ward, the “Green House” model established by the local Women’s Union chapter can be found at community cultural houses and public spaces. Tong Thi Nhung, head of the chapter, explained that the “Green House” is built with an iron frame, roofed with corrugated iron sheets, enclosed with mesh, and typically covers 1-2 square meters. It is placed in convenient locations for residents to dispose of recyclable waste. This model promotes the collection and classification of plastic waste while generating funds from recycled materials to support disadvantaged Women’s Union members. It has received strong support from members and encourages households to separate organic and inorganic waste at home.

Each year, the provincial Women’s Union launches the “Building Families with 5 No’s, 3 Cleans” campaign in connection with the new-style rural development programme and organises activities in response to the “Action Month for the Environment” (June) and World Environment Day (June 5). Local Women’s Union chapters also develop context-appropriate environmental models to maintain clean and beautiful surroundings.

In 2025, grassroots chapters installed 177 “Clean House – Beautiful Garden” plaques; launched two “Clean House – Beautiful Garden – Green Alley” residential clusters; introduced nine “Green House for Charity Fund” models; and established three “Model Women-Managed Roads.”

Additionally, in 2025, 100% of grassroots Women’s Union chapters effectively implemented the campaign, registering at least one project or task contributing to new-style rural and civilised urban development. They maintained effective models such as “Plastic Waste Collection,” “Women’s Union Chapter with Three Cleans for Advanced New-style Rural Development,” and “Women-Managed Roads.”

Women’s Union members helped repair and clean over 400 kilometres of rural roads, dredged 254 kilometres of drainage ditches, repaired more than 4,000 waste pits, planted nearly 2,000 trees, supported 234 households in accessing clean water, and assisted 207 households in building hygienic toilets. The “Green House” model alone collected and sold recyclable waste, raising 32 million VND (1,221 USD) for charity funds.

Cam Thi Hong Duyen, Chairwoman of the provincial Women’s Union, stated that in 2026, implementing the Resolution of the 14th Congress of the provincial Women’s Union, the unit will continue strengthening communication and mobilisation efforts to encourage members to join the campaign “Building Families with 5 No’s, 3 Cleans, 3 Safeties” (no poverty; no law violations or social evils; no domestic violence; no population policy violations; no malnourished children; clean house, clean kitchen, clean alley; traffic safety; labour safety; food safety), linked to new-style rural and civilised urban development.

The union will also guide grassroots chapters to improve the quality of existing models and develop new, locally appropriate environmental initiatives. Regular sanitation activities, especially during holidays and festivals, will be maintained, while resources will be mobilised to effectively support grassroots environmental movements.

Through creative models and practical approaches, Women’s Union chapters across the province have attracted widespread participation in environmental protection, raising community awareness and promoting a civilised lifestyle, joining hands to build a green, clean, and beautiful living environment.
