Song Ma - key agricultural region in Son La province

Maximising its potential and advantages, Song Ma district has mobilised various resources to develop agriculture, encouraging locals to shift crop and livestock structures toward commercial production. As a result, specialised agricultural zones featuring distinctive local products have been established, contributing to improved livelihoods for residents.

Currently, Song Ma district has a total cultivated area of 38,322 hectares, including nearly 11,000 hectares of fruit trees, with 7,760 hectares of longan and 1,820 hectares of mango. To drive a breakthrough in sustainable, market-oriented agricultural development, the district Party Committee issued Resolution No. 04-NQ/HU, guiding the implementation of the High-Tech Agriculture Development Plan for the 2020–2025 period, with a vision toward 2030. The district People’s Committee has been directed to develop plans for sustainable agriculture and rural development, promote key fruit crops, and monitor growing area codes and packaging facilities for export.

Since 2020, Song Ma has invested over 10 billion VND (nearly 400,000 USD) in various crop and livestock models, including growing Ha Den grape, longan, and mango; restoring Luong sticky rice; raising egg-laying chickens and free-range black chickens; and developing a value-chain-linked breeding cattle programme tied to product consumption.

The district has also supported businesses and cooperatives in obtaining VietGAP certification, printing labels, purchasing packaging materials, establishing product identification and traceability systems, and promoting agricultural products through mass media. Additionally, it has implemented the "One Commune, One Product" (OCOP) programme.

The locality now has 1,004 hectares of high-tech fruit cultivation and 910 hectares of off-season and staggered-harvest longan production. Additionally, 52 cooperatives apply advanced technology in agricultural production.

High-yield, high-quality fruit varieties are being maintained, including early- and late-ripening longans, Taiwanese mango, Australian mango, green-skinned pomelo, and Dien pomelo. The district’s total annual fruit production reaches 47,576 tonnes.

In 2024, domestic agricultural sales amounted to 36,945 tonnes, making up 77.7%, while exports reached 680 tonnes, accounting for 1.4%. The total value of agricultural products exceeded 1.11 trillion VND.

Farmers across the district are actively adopting new methods and applying technology in processing to address the challenge of fresh fruit sales and enhance product value.

Currently, Song Ma has nearly 3,000 longan drying kilns with a daily capacity of 1,500–2,000 tonnes of fresh fruit. Each year, local processing facilities handle approximately 9,900 tonnes of longan.

The district also boasts 15 OCOP-certified products rated three stars or higher, including honey, smoked beef, dried mango, Luong sticky rice, dried longan, and Ha Den grape.

In the livestock sector, the district has offered incentives and facilitated access to preferential loans for farmers; and partnered with businesses to ensure stable product distribution. Notably, a development plan for large livestock farming has been introduced in remote communes and especially disadvantaged hamlets.

Currently, the district has a total of 191,650 livestock and over 1.2 million poultry. The aquaculture area covers 455 hectares, with a combined farmed and caught output exceeding 1,000 tonnes.

Around 78% of large livestock farmers have built permanent or semi-permanent barns. Besides, 139 households are engaged in livestock and poultry farming under the farmstead model, with average annual income ranging from 150 million to 700 million VND.

In 2025, Song Ma will continue expanding commercial-scale agricultural production, strengthening market linkages, and applying modern technology to drive sustainable development, enhance product value, and meet demands of both domestic and export markets.

With strategic direction from local authorities and the progressive mindset of its farmers, Song Ma is steadily solidifying its position as a key agricultural region in Son La province.
