Vice Chairman of the provincial People's Committee Nguyen Thanh Cong inspects the progress of the project to address flooding in Phieng Nghe hamlet, Chieng Den commune, Son La city.

Launched on March 3, 2025, the project has currently completed around 20% of the total workload. The hydro tunnel section has seen the entrance and exit portals completed, while the main tunnel body—excavated from two ends—has reached 280 out of 710 metres. The contractor is working overtime to accelerate progress, with tunnel breakthrough expected in July.

As for the flood drainage canal and cavern section, about 90% of the excavation for the foundation pit has been completed. The reinforced concrete canal segment has reached roughly 260 out of 997.5 metres. All groundwork for the access road has been completed.

Vice Chairman of the provincial People's Committee Nguyen Thanh Cong inspects the construction progress of the hydro tunnel.

Cong requested relevant departments, Son La city authorities, and the management board for agricultural and rural development projects to coordinate closely in removing obstacles, and speeding up the construction, aiming for tunnel breakthrough before June 30.

He also called for public awareness campaigns to promote the protection of irrigation infrastructure; strictly prohibit the construction of any structures along the flood drainage canal; and organise cleanup operations to dredge irrigation systems and remove waste blocking the entrances to flood drainage tunnels.

At the same time, authorities are tasked with evaluating whether a flood drainage canal system is still necessary after dredging efforts, in connection with the Phieng Nghe anti-flooding project. Proactive proposals and recommendations are also required to ensure effective prevention and response to potential natural disasters in the future.
