Provincial Vice Chairman inspects livestock disease prevention and control efforts

Vice Chairman of the Provincial People’s Committee Nguyen Thanh Cong on July 28 led a working delegation to inspect the African swine fever (ASF) prevention and control efforts in Muong Bu and Muong La communes.

According to the report by the People's Committee of Muong La commune, ASF has been present since June 6, spreading to eight out of 54 hamlets and sub-zones, with 121 pigs dead and culled, totaling over 6.2 tonnes in weight. In Muong Bu commune, the epidemic emerged on June 19 and has since spread to 12 out of 52 hamlets and sub-zones, with 437 pigs dead and culled, totaling nearly 29 tonnes.

Pat hamlet, Muong Bu commune sets up a quarantine checkpoint and disinfect vehicles entering and leaving the locality.

Both communes have established the Disease Prevention and Control Steering Committees, distributed disinfectants and disease control supplies, and instructed localities to spray disinfectants, apply lime powder, and cull infected pigs in accordance with regulations. Quarantine checkpoints have been set up and maintained in affected areas.

The inspection team visits a household to inspect African swine fever prevention and control measures.

After inspecting the local situation, Vice Chairman Cong requested Muong Bu and Muong La to raise public awareness of disease prevention, strengthen disease management, and promptly detect and eliminate new outbreaks.

He emphasised the need for continued disinfection and environmental sanitation to limit the risk of disease spread; monitor and prevent the transport and sale of infected pigs; and assess damage to implement support measures for affected households.

The Vice Chairman stressed that the risk of large-scale disease spread remains high in the coming period, and emphasised the importance of proactive prevention by each individual and household. He called for proper implementation of routine vaccination as a key disease prevention measure.

Regarding lumpy skin disease in cattle, although no official outbreak has been declared, the authorities of both communes were instructed to closely coordinate with the Region II Agricultural Technical Station to monitor livestock health, provide care and disease prevention guidance, and prepare response measures should an outbreak occur.
