Son La leader meets with outstanding coffee enterprises, cooperatives, households

Deputy Secretary of the provincial Party Committee and Chairman of the provincial People's Committee Nguyen Dinh Viet chaired a meeting with outstanding enterprises, cooperatives, households in coffee production, processing and sale in the province on June 9.

The meeting also saw the presence of Hoang Van Chat, former Secretary of the provincial Party Committee, former Chairman of the provincial People's Council; Nguyen Thanh Cong, Vice Chairman of the provincial People's Committee; and leaders of provincial departments, agencies and sectors.

Son La boasts the largest Arabica coffee area in Vietnam with 24,300 hectares, which generate an estimated output of 37,724 tonnes in 2025. Son La coffee products have been granted Geographical Indication protection by the Intellectual Property Office of Vietnam. There are five certified OCOP (one commune one product) items, of which one is rated 5-star and four 4-star.

Currently, in the province, there are 28 enterprises and cooperatives participating in coffee production, semi-processing, and processing.

Every year, they participate in deep processing of 4,440 tonnes of coffee beans. In the first six months of 2025, coffee export volume is estimated to reach 17,800 tonnes, with a value of 69.9 million USD.

The province targets 25,000 hectares of coffee beans by 2030, with an estimated output of 40,000 tonnes. It will also aim to replant 9,800 hectares; develop 5,950 hectares of specialty coffee, and 18,000 hectares of coffee material areas that meet sustainable standards; form and develop five or more high-tech coffee areas; and export 30,000 tonnes of coffee beans to Germany, the US, Brazil, the Netherlands, and South American countries.

Speaking at the meeting, Viet emphasised the need for departments, agencies and localities to focus on building raw coffee growing areas associated with processing and consumption industries in a modern, sustainable and large-scale commodity production direction.

It is essential to apply science and technology to meet the demand for domestic and export coffee materials; improve land use efficiency and income for coffee growers; develop, maintain and protect the geographical indication "Son La coffee".

Due attention should be paid to forming and developing high-tech coffee production areas; developing specialty coffee with new varieties of high quality and productivity; establishing sustainable coffee production cooperatives, cooperative groups and alliances; and forming links between farmers and businesses in coffee production, processing and quality control, added Viet.
