From 2016 to May 30, 2025, three VUSTA affiliated units – the Centre for Sustainable Rural Development (SRD), the Center for Research on Community Development Initiatives (RIC), and the People and Nature Reconciliation (PANNATURE) – have implemented 15 projects in Son La province, with a total cost of 66 billion VND (2.53 million USD). Starting in June 2025, additional projects with an estimated total investment of 89.7 billion VND will be carried out.

These projects have been implemented mainly in the districts of Van Ho, Thuan Chau, Yen Chau, and Mai Son. Through them, over 2,000 households have participated in 58 community production groups.
Notably, three indigenous glutinous rice varieties – Tan Lanh, Tan Nhe, and Nep Chien – have been successfully restored. Sustainable coffee models have been developed, 190 hectares of forest have been planted with native trees, and over 80 composting pits and biogas digesters have been built for livestock-raising households. Additionally, 28 training courses, with 280 participants, have been organised to enhance community capacity.
Furthermore, 98 water supply systems for domestic use and production, and 54 livelihood models have been established. Conservation efforts have been made for endangered conifer species, the rare and endangered white-cheeked black gibbon, and the critically endangered pine species.
A "Green Forest" campaign has been also organised. Several climate change adaptation agricultural models have been developed, including cattle and goat farming, feed composting, and fruit tree cultivation.
The projects have also promoted the role of indigenous women in agricultural cultivation and business, and reduced plastic waste in agriculture. They have significantly contributed to socio-economic development, poverty reduction, supporting people in difficult regions and ethnic minority communities, and addressing social issues across the province.

Phan Xuan Dung, President of the Vietnam Union of Science and Technology Associations, speaks at the working session.
During the working session, the VUSTA delegation asked the Son La provincial People's Committee to direct local authorities and units to effectively coordinate and implement the ongoing projects, especially following the organisation of the two-level local government model, ensuring that projects remain uninterrupted and commitments to donors are upheld. They also emphasised the need for efficient appraisal of projects and related activities.
In his remarks, Cong affirmed that Son La province will effectively coordinate the implementation of the projects in accordance with the signed commitments. He stated that any difficulties or obstacles encountered during implementation would be promptly discussed and resolved. He also encouraged the units to expand new project components to benefit ethnic minority communities, thereby contributing to local socio-economic development.
