Impressive hair-washing festival of White Thai people in Quynh Nhai

The hair-washing festival of the White Thai people in Quynh Nhai takes place annually on the 30th day of the last lunar month. This traditional custom is closely associated with the legend of ‘Nang Han’ (Miss Han), a talented and courageous female general of the Thai ethnic group who played a vital role in driving away foreign invaders and safeguarding the nation’s borders.

Following the incense offering and rituals to invite Miss Han to join the festival, selected women are divided into two groups to go down to the river to wash their hair. This act symbolises cleansing away all misfortunes of the past year and welcoming the new year with good luck, peace, and abundant harvests.

Recognising its cultural and traditional significance, in 2020, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism officially inscribed the festival into the National List of Intangible Cultural Heritage.
