“Keo cay si” festival re-enacted

Artisans and amateur performers from Bac Yen commune on October 9 afternoon presented an excerpt of the “Keo cay si” (Pulling the Chinese banyan tree) festival.

The worship ritual is performed during the festival.

For the Muong ethnic group, “cay si” symbolises the origin of all living beings -from the tree stems the universe, representing lasting marriage, fertility, vitality, and longevity.

During the ritual, the shaman lights incense and prays to the mountain, river, and forest deities to bless the hamlets with peace, favourable weather, and abundant harvests. The ceremony includes offering prayers to the Chinese banyan tree, wishing it longevity, which symbolises a wish for the elders in the family to have renewed vitality to overcome illnesses, and live a long, healthy life.
