Moc Chau preserves, promotes Mong ethnic group’s traditional cultural identity

The Mong ethnic group has many unique and distinctive traditional cultural features, expressed through their clothing, language, folk music, festivals, and traditional crafts. Recently, Moc Chau district has supported the establishment of the Mong Ethnic Folk Culture Club in Pa Khen 3 Sub-area, Moc Chau Farm town, contributing to enriching the spiritual and cultural life of the people and supporting the development of local tourism.

The club is supported in purchasing equipment for Mong ethnic folk cultural activities.

Implementing Project 6 "Preserving and promoting the beautiful traditional cultural values of ethnic minorities in conjunction with tourism development," under the National Target Programme for Socio-Economic Development in Ethnic Minority and Mountainous Areas, the People's Committee of Moc Chau district directed the district Division of Culture and Information and the People's Committee of Moc Chau Farm town to assess the status of cultural heritage and the need to establish the club; propose solutions for preserving, restoring, and transmitting folk songs, dances, and music; and establish the Mong Ethnic Folk Culture Club in Pa Khen 3 Sub-area. The district has strengthened national unity through activities such as cultural events, teaching folk songs, dances, and traditional customs, which are deeply imbued with each ethnic group's identity. This provided the community an opportunity to exchange and enjoy healthy entertainment based on traditional cultural values.

Nguyen Thi Hoa, Vice Chairwoman of the district People's Committee, stated that preserving and promoting the cultural values of ethnic minorities in conjunction with tourism development is identified as one of the important solutions for developing Moc Chau tourism in an effective and sustainable direction. Through supporting the establishment of the Mong Ethnic Folk Culture Club, the district aims to encourage the Mong people, as well as ethnic minorities in general, to actively engage in preserving their cultural identity and play a key role in expanding the models of preserving traditional culture.

Club members perform the experimental programme "Echoes of the Mountain and Forest."

The Mong Ethnic Folk Culture Club in Pa Khen 3 Sub-area consists of 40 members, with a five-member executive committee. To ensure the club operates effectively and with high quality, the district People's Committee directed the Division of Culture and Information to organize training on preserving cultural heritage values, support the purchase of equipment for Mong ethnic folk cultural activities, and organize classes on teaching folk songs and instruments of the Mong Du ethnic branch, and design art performances for the club members.

Vang A Co, the club's chairman, shared that after its establishment, the club developed a weekly activity schedule and is determined to maintain regular practice to improve performance skills serving political tasks. “We also perform for tourists at homestays in the area, generating income for members. The club's activities give us the opportunity to meet, learn from one another, and nurture our passion and talents for folk arts, especially passing on them to the younger generation to preserve and promote our ethnic culture."

Club members from various age groups voluntarily join activities, all sharing a passion for Mong culture and boasting skills in playing the "khen" panpipe and performing traditional folk songs and dances, including the “tha kenh” dance. The club also focuses on the preservation and promotion of traditional embroidery, which not only serves daily life but also helps increase income for its members.

Club members demonstrate the art of making the Mong "khen" panpipe.

Lau Thi Dua, a club member, said: "After nearly a month of practicing under the guidance of artisans, club members have acquired basic knowledge about traditional ethnic culture, folk songs and dances, and skills in using ethnic musical instruments. We have developed cultural performances bearing our ethnic identity and participated in the experimental programme 'Echoes of the Mountain and Forest’ during the club launch ceremony."

With the attention and support of the local Party committee and authorities, the Mong Ethnic Folk Culture Club in Pa Khen 3 Sub-area, Moc Chau Farm town, is expected to continue to thrive and be expanded to other Mong ethnic villages, contributing to raising awareness of preserving the Mong ethnic cultural identity among individuals, families, and clans.
