Pang A Festival, La Ha ethnic cultural space held

Pi Toong commune, Muong La district on April 12 organised the 2024 Pang A Festival and a cultural space of the La Ha ethnic group. The festival is part of a series of activities to celebrate the 75th founding anniversary of the district Party Organisation (June 15, 1949 - 2024); and 45 years of moving the district centre to It Ong town (1979-2024).

The ritual part was recreated in a theatrical form, with rituals performed around a ‘xang bok’ tree, and offering trays which include local products and ‘can’ (bamboo tube) wine jars to worship gods. The shaman performed the rituals to invite  ancestors and gods to attend the ceremony; express gratitude to ancestors, heaven and earth; and pray for favourable weather, good harvests, and a prosperous life.

While the shaman was performing the rituals, local people danced together to pray for rain, and joined a ‘con’ (cloth ball) throwing contest. The special dance in the Pang A Festival is Sung Lung, which depicts the La Ha people’s fertility belief that prays for people to avoid having children but not being able to raise them, for health, and for all things to flourish.

The shaman and adopted children invite gods to enjoy the offerings.

After the ritual part, there came a vibrant and joyful festive part. People marched to Pi Tay hamlet and joined a culinary contest with typical dishes of the La Ha ethnic group. There, they continued to perform dances close to daily life and imbued with La Ha ethnic identity. The festival attracted the participation of a large number of people in the commune.

The festival was formed a long time ago and has been preserved until today, in order to maintain the traditional cultural values and beauty of the ethnic people in Pi Toong commune; and promote and introduce the potential and cultural identity of ethnic groups in Muong La district in general and the unique culture of the La Ha ethnic group in Pi Toong commune in particular.
