The Pung Hieng Festival of the Dao Tien ethnic people is re-enacted in Phieng Luong commune, Moc Chau district.

Pung Hieng is a significant ritual of a clan and is considered the largest festival in the Dao Tien community in Moc Chau district. This festival is held every 3-4 years for 4-6 days during the Lunar New Year.

Although it is a clan ritual, the Pung Hieng Festival is open to the entire hamlet, making it highly significant for community bonding. It has become a hamlet festival where everyone has the right and responsibility to participate in order to seek blessings and good fortune for their families.

The festival holds profound humanitarian significance, fostering connections among ethnic communities and reminding young generations of the tradition of “when drinking water, remember its source”. It also showcases the cultural and spiritual values of the Dao people.

The re-enacted festival features all traditional rituals, including the opening ceremony, the ritual to welcome supernatural beings to the festival, the ritual to drive away evil spirits (to cleanse the home of bad luck from the past year), the ritual to welcome good fortune for the new year, the thank-giving ritual, the ritual to pray for bumper crops, and the closing ceremony. They are conducted by clan leaders and experienced shamans. Following the rituals, there are festive activities, where local art teams and delegates come together in energetic dances in the vibrant sounds of drums and gongs.
