Focusing on education about sea and island sovereignty, Binh Minh Primary and Secondary School in Co Noi commune, Mai Son district, has built the "Truong Sa Marker" model within its campus.

This initiative inspires students’ love for their homeland and country, and their determination, pride, and responsibility for protecting the sacred sea and island sovereignty of the nation.

Visiting the school, one is impressed by the "Truong Sa Marker" model, which is placed in a respectful position within the school's campus. The model features the national emblem of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, the national flag symbol, the geographical coordinates (latitude, longitude) of Truong Sa (Spratly), and the image of the bronze drum, symbolising the unity and solidarity of the Vietnamese people.

Khuc Huu Vinh, the school's principal, shared that the model was built in May 2024, standing at 6.87 meters tall with a foundation area of 7.3 square meters, made of reinforced concrete. The total cost was nearly 60 million VND (2,347 USD), with support from the Mai Son district Youth Union, the Vietnam Youth Federation’s Mai Son chapter, and various donors.

Every week and month, the school organises flag-raising ceremonies at the "Truong Sa Marker" and holds extracurricular activities with visual aids to help teachers and students learn more about the country's sea and island sovereignty.

The sea and island sovereignty education is conducted in alignment with each level. Primary school students are provided images showcasing the landscapes, marine resources, and stories about naval soldiers protecting the seas and islands. Meanwhile, at the secondary school level, students access geographical concepts and materials directly related to Vietnam’s maritime territory through geography lessons.

Nguyen Nhu Ngoc, a teacher in Social Sciences, said that most of the students live in mountainous areas and mainly learn about the seas and islands through books, newspapers, television, and the lessons taught by their teachers. Therefore, when organising extracurricular activities about sea and island sovereignty, the school combines images, videos, models, and maps to engage students.

Activities like answering questions, quizzes with prizes, and sharing stories about life on the islands and coastal communities help instill in students a love for their homeland, national spirit, and a gratitude for the sacrifices made by previous generations to protect the national independence and freedom, she said.

Tran Thi Quynh Tho, a student in Class 8A, said: "In the past, we only learned about the seas and islands through our teachers' lessons from textbooks, and through social media and television. Since the model was built, the school has organised regular extracurricular activities on maritime sovereignty, giving us the chance to expand our knowledge about the seas and islands. We now understand the hardships and sacrifices of our ancestors and feel grateful for the soldiers who have protected our nation's skies and seas, so that we can live in peace today."

The "Truong Sa Marker" model has become a source of pride for the staff, teachers, and students at the school. It serves as an ideal space for students to experience first-hand, gaining knowledge about the geographical location, the mainland, the borders, and Truong Sa and Hoang Sa (Paracel) archipelagoes of Vietnam.

This initiative helps motivate students to study hard, practice diligently, and strive to become exemplary citizens who contribute positively to the building and protection of a prosperous and beautiful Vietnam.
