Unique leafophone sound of Mong ethnic people

Leaf flute has a clear and melodious sound like the song of a nightingale. The Mong ethnic people use the sound of a musical leaf to express their feelings and emotions towards the nature, sentiments between people and people, as well as the love between couples.

Leafophone is a simple musical instrument closely associated with the daily life of Mong ethnic people.

Leaves used to make music must be thin and have a wide, smooth surface without serrations like leaves of longan, mango, guava, Phrynium placentarium and banana. When blowing a leaf flute, you must use hands to hold both ends of the leaf and hold the leaf horizontally between your lips, gently roll the edge of the leaf to fit your lips, and use your tongue to push the breath through the gap between the lips into the leaf slit to create a clear sound following the melody of songs.

Leafophone is often used in ceremonies such as weddings, new rice celebrations, home warming and Tet (Lunar New Year). Today’s modern life has seen the appearance of many electronic musical instruments, but the Mong people still preserve and promote the value of leaf flute along with their unique cultural features.
