Women in Mai Son district preserve, promote traditional culture

Over the past years, the Women’s Union in Mai Son district has encouraged its members to participate in economic development, the building of equal, progressive and happy families, and especially the preservation and promotion of cultural identities.

Women in Phieng Trai hamlet, Hat Lot commune, Mai Son district, pass down weaving skills to their children.

The district is home to the five ethnic groups of Thai, Mong, Muong, Kho Mu and Kinh that have their own cultural identities with traditional values reflected through their costumes, languages, traditional crafts, festivals, customs, practices, and rituals.

To preserve and promote the cultural identities, the union’s chapters have established art groups and clubs, preserved and developed the traditional craft of brocade weaving, and opened classes for children who learn about traditional culture and folk games.

The district now counts 364 art clubs and groups where members of the Women’s Union play the key role. They have regularly participated in cultural and art exchange programmes, and performed at holidays, festivals and events in the locality, contributing to preserving and promoting the beauty and values of traditional culture.

The union has also paid attention to building and duplicating economic and tourism development models in combination with the preservation and promotion of cultural values. The union has opened classes on intangible culture for its members. It has also created conditions for women to join training courses to raise their knowledge and professional skills, and helped them access loans to start a business from traditional crafts.

Notably, the Women’s Union in Phieng Cam commune has established Thai and Mong brocade weaving teams, and groups of women who sing and use traditional musical instruments in Noong Tau Thai, Noong Tau Mong and Hua Na hamlets. Each of the teams and groups gathers from 10 to 20 members who wear traditional costumes daily; and maintain the languages, customs and habits of the Kho Mu, Thai and Mong ethnic groups. They have also collected traditional songs, dances, and musical instruments, and taught embroidery and sewing techniques of the ethnic groups to women and children.

In Me hamlet, Muong Bon commune, two art groups have been established, maintaining regular and effective activities to serve tourists, and contributing to preserving cultural values of the local Thai people.

Through the practical activities, the Women's Union in Mai Son district has done a good job of preserving and promoting the cultural identity of each ethnic group, contributing to the sustainability of cultural values of ethnic minority groups there./.
