Dengue fever and infectious disease prevention efforts promoted

The Son La provincial Department of Health on July 11 attended an online conference on strengthening dengue fever and infectious disease prevention and control efforts in 2025.

The event was chaired by Hoang Minh Duc, Director of the Department of Preventive Medicine under the Ministry of Health, and was connected to health departments across the country.

Son La's delegates attend the conference.

At the event, delegates were briefed on Plan No. 883/KH-BYT issued on June 20, 2025 by the Ministry of Health, outlining a peak action campaign to combat dengue fever, hand-foot-mouth disease, and COVID-19. Reports on the dengue situation in the first half of the year and ongoing prevention activities were also presented.

Currently, Vietnam is entering the peak season for dengue fever. The hot and humid weather, along with frequent rainfall, creates ideal conditions for mosquitoes to breed and transmit disease. A localised increase in dengue cases has already been recorded in several provinces.

In Son La, two active dengue fever outbreaks have been reported in Mai Son and Song Ma communes. Following epidemiological investigations, the provincial Centre for Disease Control (CDC) coordinated with local authorities, regional medical centres, and related units to conduct three rounds of chemical spraying to kill mosquitoes in high-risk residential areas.

In the coming period, provincial and municipal Departments of Health are expected to continue reviewing triage, classification, emergency response, and treatment protocols for dengue fever and infectious diseases. The goal is to ensure timely admission and appropriate management of patients in line with Ministry of Health guidelines, minimising severe cases and fatalities.

Efforts should include safe patient transfers, professional consultations before hospital transfers, and maintaining hotlines to support dengue and infectious disease treatment. Sufficient supplies of medicines, IV fluids, and blood products must be ensured. Training and capacity building for medical personnel will be essential to improving response effectiveness.

In his concluding remarks, Duc instructed provincial health departments to organise peak communication campaigns and proactively implement preventive measures against dengue fever, hand-foot-mouth disease, and COVID-19. He emphasised the importance of evaluating the effectiveness of these peak campaigns to minimise the impact of infectious diseases in local communities.
