Unique glutinous rice cake pounding contest held at Huoi Mot Ethnic Culture and Sports Festival

As part of the series of activities of the Huoi Mot commune Ethnic Culture and Sports Festival 2026, a vibrant glutinous rice cake pounding contest took place on January 17, creating a lively and festive atmosphere.

The contest is a distinctive folk cultural activity of the Huoi Mot Ethnic Culture and Sports Festival, drawing a large number of local people and visitors. It provides an opportunity for the Mong ethnic community to vividly recreate traditional customs closely associated with their spiritual life during the Lunar New Year and springtime.

Eight teams from hamlets across the commune took part in the contest, with each consisting of two men and two women wearing traditional costumes. The competition unfolded in an exciting atmosphere amid enthusiastic cheers from a large audience.

Steamed glutinous rice was pounded quickly and rhythmically by team members, demonstrating skillfulness, proficiency and strong teamwork. The teams maintained proper techniques while making full use of time, striving to complete the task as early as possible. The finished cakes met traditional standards, ensuring the required elasticity and smooth texture.

The contest helped honour the traditional cultural values of the Mong ethnic group in Huoi Mot commune. At the same time, it enabled younger generations to gain a deeper understanding of their people’s fine customs, contributing to the promotion of a festival rich in cultural identity.
