In recent years, the provincial Department of Science and Technology has advised the province on implementing scientific initiatives to build and develop trademarks for key products bearing the province’s geographical identity.

Despite being granted a protection certificate by the National Office of Intellectual Property (NOIP) in 2018, the “Ca Song Da Son La” (Son La Da River Fish) brand had not been effectively utilised. Therefore, in 2022, Son La launched a scientific project to fully and effectively tap the certified brand to serve new-style rural area building under the Intellectual Property Asset Development Programme by 2030.
The project team successfully developed a model for leveraging the certified trademark “Ca Song Da Son La” and granted the right to use this certification to five cooperatives that meet the required conditions for cage fish farming in the hydroelectric reservoir. Among them, three in Quynh Nhai district were selected to participate in the model, namely Ho Quynh Aquaculture Cooperative (Chieng On commune), Chieng Khoang Aquaculture Cooperative (Chieng Khoang commune), and An Binh Aquaculture Cooperative (Chieng Bang commune). The initiative was evaluated as "Relatively Good" by the provincial Scientific and Technological Project Appraisal Council at the end of 2024.

Currently, the province has over 84,000 hectares of fruit orchards, with export value hitting 200 million USD in 2024. Key products such as mango and longan have been granted certification marks as “Son La Mango” and “Son La Longan” in Vietnam. These brands are now in the process of being registered for certification protection in China, thus creating a legal framework to facilitate the province's agricultural exports.
Alongside these key products, in early 2025, Son La has received certification mark protection for three additional products: Son La macadamia, Son La pineapple, and Ta Xua Bac Yen tea.
Following the certification of the Ta Xua Bac Yen tea trademark by the NOIP, the Bac Yen district People's Committee granted the right to use the trademark to various organisations and individuals, including PLA Agriculture and Ethnic Cultural Conservation Cooperative, A Chau Agriculture Cooperative, and Song A Denh’s household.

Officials discuss the use of the certified trademark “Ca Song Da Son La” at Ho Quynh Aquaculture Cooperative in Chieng On commune, Quynh Nhai district.
Currently, Son La boasts 31 agricultural and aquatic products bearing the Son La geographical indication, all of which have been granted protection certificates by the NOIP. Additionally, two products have secured protection certificates abroad.

Through monitoring and inspections conducted by relevant authorities, most organisations and individuals have complied with regulations on trademark management, geographical indications, and product quality, and ensuring food safety. The certification of these products serves as clear evidence of the province's efforts in brand building and development for its signature agricultural products.
This progress reinforces Son La’s agriculture as a pillar of the local economy, gradually establishing a strong brand presence for local agricultural products in both domestic and international markets.
