Son La focuses on mango cultivation for export

Yen Chau is one of the districts with a large mango cultivation area in Son La province, covering 3,283 hectares of various types, including 3,022 hectares of GL4 mangoes and 261 hectares of local mangoes, with a total yield of over 14,300 tonnes. Mangoes are now in the flowering stage, so the cooperatives and mango growers here are focusing on caring for the new season.

The mango orchard of a farmer in Vang Lung hamlet, Chieng Hac commune, Yen Chau district, is cultivated under VietGAP standards and was recognised as a high-tech mango growing area in 2024.

Safety production processes are prioritised, especially the use of plant protection products and fertilisers that are on the approved list of importing countries. Ha Van Son, Director of the Chieng Hac Safe Agricultural Products Cooperative in Chieng Hac commune, said that the cooperative has 25 hectares of mangoes, of which 14.5 hectares are certified as meeting VietGAP standards and recognised as a high-tech mango area. In addition to the mango areas of members, it also collaborates with 64 mango-growing households in the region, with a total area of nearly 160 hectares.

At this time, the cooperative is actively spreading knowledge and guiding its members and linked households to proactively care for and prune flowers, remove overgrown and diseased branches, and ensure proper irrigation for the plants. Especially, the cooperative has clearly identified mango areas for export, using plant protection products that are on the approved list of importing countries and strictly adhering to the prescribed quarantine periods. This is a key factor in ensuring product quality and safety, meeting export requirements.

Staff from the Mai Son district Agricultural Service Centre are guiding local farmers in Hat Lot commune on how to care for high-quality mangoes.

At the end of 2024, over 300 hectares of mangoes in Na Nga, Huoi Set, Huoi Mong, and Vang Lung villages of Chieng Hac commune were recognised as high-tech mango growing areas. In 2024, Yen Chau district exported approximately 4,000 tonnes of mangoes, generating an estimated value of 1.3 million USD. As the 2025 mango season begins, in order to achieve better results than in 2024, the district’s agricultural division has proposed the district People's Committee support the supply of fruit protective bags and traceability labels for mangoes grown by local households and cooperatives, in order to enhance product quality and meet export standards.

In Hat Lot commune, a large mango-growing area in Mai Son district, there are 934 hectares of mangoes, accounting for 25.4% of the total mango area in the district. In late 2024, Hat Lot was recognised as one of the three communes in the district to achieve the "High-tech Mango Production Area" title. The Ngoc Lan Cooperative, gathering 400 mango-growing households in Hat Lot, is actively participating in high-tech mango production. The district Agricultural Service Centre has organised specialised training courses to provide intensive farming techniques for households in the high-tech production area.

The province now has nearly 20,000 hectares of mangoes, with a production of 77,700 tonnes. The varieties of GL4, GL6, Thai, and local mangoes (round mangoes) are widely cultivated. The care and harvesting processes are carried out systematically to ensure food safety and nutritional quality. Over 1,400 hectares of mangoes have been granted cultivation area codes, paving the way for exporting mangoes to the Chinese market and then the US, Australia, and Japan.

The application of high-tech methods to ensure quality and meet international standards has created a breakthrough for Son La mangoes, opening up many potential export opportunities, bringing economic value to the locality, and helping to affirm the brand of Vietnamese agricultural products in the international market.
