More water supply projects benefit ethnic minorities

Mai Son district in Son La province has paid due attention to solving the shortage of domestic water in difficult areas. With funding from the national target programme for socio-economic development in ethnic-inhabited and mountainous areas, many projects have been implemented and put into use, helping ethnic minorities improve their quality of life.

Previously, as a domestic water supply work in Hat Set hamlet, Na Chit commune was damaged, locals had to use plastic cans to collect water from streams. In late 2022, more than 100 million VND (4,150 USD) was allocated from the national target programme to repair it. Currently, more than 120 households in the hamlet have gained direct access to clean water.

 

At the beginning of this year, the inter-hamlet water supply project in Chieng Mai commune was also granted 6 billion VND (250,000 USD) to start construction. At present, more than 50% of the workload has been completed. It is expected to be put into use by the end of 2023, ensuring water supply for more than 1,100 households in Vut Bon, Coi Quynh, Cuom Son, and Dam Hoa hamlets. Once completed, the project will contribute to raising the percentage of households accessing water for domestic use in the commune to over 95%.

Investment programmes, projects and policies in support of ethnic minority areas in the district have been implemented promptly and concertedly, in accordance with State regulations. Since 2021, Mai Son district has received funding to build four concentrated domestic water works, meeting the needs of over 1,600 households in Phieng Cam, Chieng Chan, Chieng Mai and Chieng Luong communes; and scattered domestic water works have been also built, benefiting 63 households in Chieng Mai, Chieng Dong, Chieng Kheo, Na Ot, Phieng Cam and Chieng Noi communes.

 

The projects have solved the shortage of domestic water, contributing to raising the percentage of rural population using hygienic water in the district to 98%. The lives of ethnic minorities have been significantly improved. The district is striving for 99% of rural households using hygienic water by 2025.
