Son La responds to World Tuberculosis Day

The provincial Lung Hospital organised a conference in Mai Son commune on March 24 to mark World Tuberculosis Day (March 24); review the activities of the Tuberculosis Control Programme 2025 and implement the programme for 2026.

Attending the conference were leaders from the provincial Department of Health, the provincial General Hospital, representatives from regional general hospitals, Yen Ha Prison, the provincial Department of Public Security’s Detention Centre, and the provincial Drug Addiction Treatment Facility.

In recent years, the tuberculosis control network has been well maintained at grassroots levels, hospitals, prisons, and drug treatment facilities. All communes in the province have officers assigned to tuberculosis control work.

Each year, the provincial Lung Hospital conducts a 2X screening campaign using chest X-rays and Xpert and Mantoux tests, focusing on high-risk groups in the community to detect active TB, latent TB, and multidrug-resistant TB early. In 2025, 5,200 people were screened, 41 TB patients of various types were detected, including two children with TB. The treatment success rate reached 91%.

In 2026, units will continue to proactively implement tuberculosis control measures, detect cases in the community, healthcare facilities, drug treatment centres, and prisons across the province. Efforts will focus on high-risk and contact groups to maximise detection of TB cases in the community, enabling early treatment to break the chain of transmission and reduce TB incidence.

Close coordination among local healthcare units will ensure early detection of all types of TB, including pulmonary TB, extrapulmonary TB, TB/HIV, pediatric TB, and drug-resistant TB.

The targets are to detect 28 TB cases of all types per 100,000 population; detect 22 bacteriologically confirmed pulmonary TB cases per 100,000 population; reduce mortality and the proportion of multidrug-resistant TB cases to under 3% of newly detected TB patients; and increase the treatment success rate for bacteriologically confirmed pulmonary TB to over 90%.

Delegates attend the conference.

During the programme, delegates discussed the current situation of TB detection and treatment management, TB/HIV management, challenges and obstacles in TB control, TB prevention activities, screening, management of first-line TB drugs in prisons, and detection, diagnosis, and treatment reimbursement through health insurance funds.

Doctors from the provincial Lung Hospital attend the conference.

This year’s World Tuberculosis Day has the theme: “TB detection linked with regular health check-ups for every citizen.” The provincial Lung Hospital and associated units actively responded with specific measures to strengthen early TB detection through routine health check-ups, thereby helping reduce community transmission and improve treatment outcomes in the province.
