Son La steps up communications work to reduce gender imbalance at birth

Statistics show that the sex ratio at birth in Son La province stands at 116.4 boys/100 girls. To minimise the consequences of gender imbalance, local agencies have intensified communications activities to raise public awareness and responsibility in the population and family planning work, including gender equality.

In 2023, the province has organised 402 thematic talks, more than 30,500 club meetings on how to reduce gender imbalance at birth, and distributed over 4,000 leaflets to remote and border communes and 1,042 hamlets in extremely difficult circumstances.

There were also extracurricular activities at 34 high schools across the province to equip their students with knowledge about adolescent reproductive health and gender imbalance.

Local authorities have coordinated with media agencies in the information work to raise public awareness of the issue, striving to bring the sex ratio at birth to 113.4 boys/100 girls by the end of 2025./.
