Students spread message on environmental protection

From domestic waste, Luong Minh Tan and Truong Yen Nhi, students from the Moc Chau 8/4 Secondary School, and Lo Thanh Long from the Chieng Ngan B Primary and Secondary School in Son La city, made a painting named "Ha Nhi Girl" which won the first prize in the category of environmentally friendly products at the 2023 Son La creative contest for adolescents, teenagers and children.

The "Ha Nhi Girl" painting wins first prize at the 2023 Son La creative contest for adolescents, teenagers and children.

Sharing about the reason for creating the work, team leader Luong Minh Tan said “Although we are studying in different localities, we were all born and grew up in Moc Chau district. As the world's leading nature destination, Moc Chau attracts a large number of tourists and as a result, the amount of waste is also increasing, negatively impacting the surrounding environment. We thought of taking advantage of waste discarded by local people and tourists to create meaningful products, with the desire to contribute to reducing environmental pollution.”

In March 2023, team members proposed this idea to the schools, and received consent and positive guidance from teachers. Teacher Nguyen Thi Hong Van from the Moc Chau 8/4 Secondary School, who directly guided the team to implement the project, shared “When the students shared their idea, I found this a very useful creative solution suitable for students' ages. I guided them in choosing materials, researching and testing.

Materials to complete the painting include rope, hemp sacks, scraps of fabric, wool, multi-purpose paper, bamboo fruit baskets, foam and plaster. Depending on each type of material, the students chose the appropriate treatment method. First, they cleaned the ropes and hemp sacks and dried them to prevent mold.

After processing the materials, they sketched their idea with a pen on cardboard, applied plaster to shape the face of Ha Nhi girl, mixed colours, created frames, and selected materials to paste on the painting. To keep the materials on the painting for a long time, the team used glue suitable for the materials, and then attached each piece of material until the painting was completed and framed.

The highlight of the painting is the flowing hair of the girl. The team used black paint to spray onto strips of sacks and multi-purpose tissues, created volume with hairspray, then used glue to combine them together, created waves and a few twists to make the hair look like that of mountainous ethnic girls.

This initial success is expected to be a premise for them to have new creative ideas, contributing to disseminating and encouraging others in schools and the community to join hands in environmental protection for a waste-free future.
