Thousands of tourists flock to Son Tra Flower Festival in Ngoc Chien commune

On the early morning on March 15, tourist groups from all over came to Ngoc Chien commune, Muong La district to attend the opening ceremony of the commune’s third Son Tra (Hawthorn) Flower Festival 2025.

The opening ceremony was attended by representatives from various provincial departments and agencies, leaders from Muong La district, representatives from Tu Le commune, Van Chan district, and Nam Khat commune, Mu Cang Chai district, Yen Bai province; representatives from tourism cooperatives and businesses; along with a large number of local people and tourists from both inside and outside the province.

The Son Tra Flower Festival 2025 in Ngoc Chien commune takes place over two days, from March 15-16. At the festival, locals and tourists can contemplate the son tra flowers and enjoy art performances. There are also exhibitions showcasing agricultural products, cultural items, and standout OCOP (One Commune Once Product) products from Ngoc Chien commune and neighbouring districts, as well as local businesses and cooperatives.

The festival features new and exciting activities, such as a competition for the most beautiful son tra flower garden, a cake pounding contest, a pa pao spinning competition, goat fighting, a traditional costume show highlighting the beauty of the girls from the fairy-tale region of Ngoc Chien, a cooking competition, folk games, and traditional ethnic sports. Additionally, there are folk dance performances like the "Sap" and "Xoe" dances, as well as activities to contemplate the beauty of the son tra flowers.

The festival takes place amidst the blooming Son Tra flower forests.

Ngoc Chien is located at an altitude of over 1,800 metres above sea level, surrounded by two majestic mountain ranges and over 18,000 hectares of natural forest, including 2,000 hectares of son tra trees in Nam Nghep hamlet. With a cool climate year-round, the locals still preserve their traditional culture and ethnic identity, celebrated through various traditional festivals. The commune is also home to hundreds-year-old stilt houses made of Po Mu wood, and natural hot springs.

The Son Tra Flower Festival is held during the peak blooming season to promote and honour the pure beauty of the son tra flower. It also serves as a platform to introduce the unique and dynamic image of Ngoc Chien to both domestic and international visitors. Ngoc Chien is a distinct destination, rich in tourism resources, awaiting travelers from all regions to come and explore its hidden treasures.

Right after the opening ceremony, the delegates, locals, and visitors were treated to a spectacular art programme themed “Ngoc Chien - The Season of Son Tra Flowers.” The programme featured captivating songs, dances, and performances that praise the glorious Party, the beloved President Ho Chi Minh, the love for the homeland, the beauty of Son La, and the landscapes of Muong La and Ngoc Chien. The performances were presented by artists from the mass art teams, including those from hamlets and schools within Ngoc Chien commune.

Following the art programme, various sports competitions, cultural exchanges, and traditional games of the Mong ethnic group took place, creating a lively, joyful, and exciting atmosphere for the festival.
