Muong La develops OCOP products

Tapping local strengths and implementing the "One Commune, One Product" (OCOP) program, Muong La district of Son La province has developed six OCOP products.

The products have good quality and are favored by consumers, bringing high and sustainable economic efficiency to the locality.

Chieng Lao Agricultural Cooperative's stone’s honey is recognized as a 4-star OCOP product.

Nguyen Van Tam, Vice Chairman of the district People's Committee, said that the district has provided more than 1.7 billion VND (71,737 USD) for groups of households, production groups and cooperatives to complete and standardize the six products in terms of packaging design, label printing, intellectual property rights and website design.

It has coordinated with other sectors to guide units, organizations and individuals in the locality to print labels, code and barcodes on packaging and sign up for the program; promoted trade promotion activities and created conditions for cooperatives and enterprises to participate in fairs inside and outside the province to expand consumption markets, he added.

According to Tam, when participating in the OCOP program, farmers, cooperatives, and businesses have been supported by the district and province in technology transfer, development of agricultural models applying high technology in combination with product preliminary processing, processing and quality management in line with advanced standards.

Enterprises, cooperatives and business households have been also encouraged to promote production linkage under value chains and build collective brands for their products. With the attention and support of specialized agencies and local authorities, households, cooperatives and businesses have focused on expanding the areas of crops under organic, VietGAP and GlobalGAP standards.

Hung Thinh Cooperative in Muong Bu commune has 16 hectares of apple recognized as meeting VietGAP standard, with an average yield of 18-22 tons per ha, and a selling price of 50,000 VND (2.11 USD) per kg. Nguyen Dinh Huong, Director of the cooperative, said that the cooperative's apple has been recognized as a 3-star OCOP product and is now available at supermarket chains and clean fruit stores inside and outside the province. The cooperative is expanding the apple growing area and improving its quality to meet market demand.

Ngoc Chien sticky rice has been cultivated by Thai ethnic people in Ngoc Chien commune for many generations. With its aromatic flavor and delicious taste, it has become a 4-star OCOP product at the provincial level. According to Lo Van Thoa, Vice Chairman of the commune People's Committee, the commune has zoned off rice planting areas and provided technical guidance for farmers towards organic production to improve rice value, thus creating a signature product in association with community-based tourism development.

Building OCOP products has opened up opportunities for cooperatives, businesses and farmers to join production chains, improve agricultural product value, and develop agricultural and rural economy towards efficiency and sustainability, thus increasing product competitiveness in the market.

Muong La is directing the completion and upgrading of products of local strength and developing new products for joining the OCOP program. It is also stepping up the product promotion and marketing as well as setting up venues displaying, introducing and selling OCOP products in domestic and foreign markets.
