OCOP programme enhances agricultural product value

Leveraging the local potential and advantages, Thuan Chau district has boosted the OCOP (One Commune Once Product) programme, contributing to increasing product value, driving production development, and enhancing the efficiency of the new-style rural development programme.

Oolong tea by Thu Dan Tea Co., Ltd., in Phong Lai commune, Thuan Chau district, achieves the OCOP 4-star standard.

With the goal of developing OCOP products that feature regional characteristics and local creativity, the district has reviewed the typical agricultural products with potential from its communes and town. It has also provided advice and guidance to cooperatives and households on the necessary procedures to participate in the OCOP programme. In 2024, the district surveyed and identified eight products with strengths and established a council to evaluate and rank OCOP products. It directed the specialized agencies to instruct household groups, production teams, and cooperatives to create product packaging, labels, and traceability codes; and introduced, promoted, and sold the products at local and national trade fairs.

In 2024, after evaluation, three products were rated 3 stars, including vacuum-sealed black chicken and black chicken floss by Cha May Agricultural Cooperative; and Mac Khen powder by Phong Lap Agricultural Cooperative. Additionally, four products earned 4 stars, namely tourism products by Pha Din Tourism Cooperative, Gaba tea tablets, green tea tablets, and Oolong tea by Thu Dan Tea Co., Ltd.

Pleased with the 3-star OCOP rating, Lo Van Hoan, Director of Phong Lap Agricultural Cooperative, shared: "Mac Khen is a unique spice commonly used in cooking. Currently, Phong Lap commune has 30 hectares of Mac Khen trees concentrated in Na Ban, Ta Tu, Na Khoang, Mau Thai, Pa Sang, and Lap hamlets. Developing Mac Khen powder as an OCOP product creates a distinctive local product, contributing to increasing locals’ income."

Lau A Lau, Director of Cha May Agricultural Cooperative in Long He commune, stated: "Currently, the cooperative raises nearly 1,000 black chickens. In 2024, the cooperative registered its vacuum-sealed black chicken and black chicken floss products to achieve the OCOP 3-star rating. This provides the opportunity and motivation for the cooperative to continue building black chicken eggs as an OCOP product."

The OCOP programme has helped harness local potential and advantages, creating products with high economic value. According to Ha Trung Thang, Vice Chairman of the Thuan Chau district People's Committee and Chairman of the district OCOP Product Evaluation and Ranking Council, once certified, OCOP products bear the OCOP label and ranking on their packaging, serving as a 'passport' to supermarkets and distribution networks. Some products rated 3 stars or higher have already gained consumer trust. This is also a condition for cooperatives and households to expand production, diversify packaging, and bring OCOP products to both domestic and international markets.

Currently, the district is implementing the project "Producing OCOP products from son tra (hawthorn) fruit, associated with the development of raw material areas and forming a sustainable value chain for hawthorn products" in Long He commune. The project aims to make son tra a key crop, promote tourism through experiential activities, son tra picking festivals, and the production of products such as son tra tea, son tra juice, dried son tra, and son tra powder.

To enhance the effectiveness of the OCOP programme, the district is focusing on guiding cooperatives and households to diversify their products to meet consumer tastes and needs. In addition, it is intensifying trade promotion for OCOP products rated 3 stars or higher, promoting and selling them, seeking distributors, and expanding consumption markets, contributing to increasing the value of agricultural products and boosting local economic development.
