Strawberry season in Moc Chau

As the Lunar New Year (Tet) festival is approaching, the demand for various fruits increases. Taking advantage of this trend, cooperatives and strawberry growers in Moc Chau township are focusing on improving the quality of their strawberries to meet market demand during the Tet holiday.

In Dong Sang commune, a large strawberry-growing area in Moc Chau, covering 96 hectares, the local people are carefully tending to their strawberry fields, ensuring they are ready to serve customers during Tet. Taking us to some of the strawberry farms in the area, Vi Thi Phuong, Vice Chairman of the communal People's Committee, said that strawberries are often planted around September, and harvested from late December to early April of the following year. To enhance the quality of the fruit, the commune has coordinated with relevant authorities to organize training courses for local growers on VietGAP standards, ensuring the production of clean, safe, and delicious strawberries. Currently, the average yield is over 15 tonnes per hectare, with prices ranging from 200,000 VND to 400,000 VND (16 USD) per kilogram depending on the type. On average, each hectare generates approximately 2 billion VND (79,713 USD) in income.

Visiting a 1.6-hectare strawberry farm owned by Hoang Van Bang in Ang hamlet, Dong Sang commune, we found his family busy harvesting ripe strawberries for the Tet market. He shared: "Our family has invested in greenhouses, net houses, and uses drip irrigation and automatic fertilization systems. Currently, we harvest 70 to 100 kilograms of strawberries daily, with each batch sold as soon as it is harvested, at prices ranging from 200,000 VND to 380,000 VND per kilogram."

 The strawberries are packaged in well-designed boxes for the Tet market.

Moc Chau has nearly 130 hectares of strawberries, mostly in Dong Sang and Muong Sang commune and the towns of Moc Chau and Moc Chau Farm. Thanks to the application of advanced agricultural techniques, Moc Chau strawberries are large, juicy, bright red, and sweet, making them one of the region's signature products, available at supermarkets in Hanoi and many other localities across the country. To meet the diverse needs of consumers, especially during Tet, growers carefully select and sort the strawberries by size, then package them carefully in plastic and cardboard boxes, and even unique wicker baskets, ensuring both quality and aesthetic appeal.

In addition, owners also open their farms to tourists, allowing them to pick fresh strawberries and take photos. This offers a unique experience, helping visitors immerse themselves in the lively Tet atmosphere on the picturesque Moc Chau plateau.

According to Dang Thi Huyen from Hoa Moc Chau Cooperative in Moc Chau Farm town, the cooperative grows more than 15 hectares of strawberries. To serve tourists who come to experience strawberry picking, it has hired additional workers to care for the strawberry farm and created spaces for tourists to pick strawberries and take photos. In addition, visitors can enjoy various strawberry-based products, such as dried strawberries, crispy dried strawberries, and strawberry jam. The busiest times are weekends, with the farm hosting over 1,000 visitors on some days."

Visiting Hoa Moc Chau Cooperative to experience strawberry picking, Tran Thu Thuy from Hanoi said: "Picking strawberries ourselves and tasting the freshly harvested fruits was a very enjoyable experience. I picked the largest, most beautiful ones to bring home as Tet gifts for my relatives."

Thanks to meticulous attention in every step of production, from choosing seeds to cultivation, harvesting, and packaging, Moc Chau strawberries have affirmed their quality and meet the increasingly demanding market requirements. During Tet, the bright red strawberries not only enhance the Tet fruit tray but also serve as a meaningful gift, strengthening family bonds and conveying the distinctive flavours of Moc Chau’s spring to every corner of the country.
